A study was recently done identifying the different ways in which Americans like to swear from region-to-region.

Jack Grieve, lecturer in Forensic Linguistics at the School of Languages and Social Sciences at Aston University in Birmingham, analyzed geotagged tweets from 2013 to 2014 in order to determine what sort of language is used and where. He then placed them on a collection of maps, using color indicators (red represents a higher frequency; blue represents less).

Here are some of the results:

The Midwest really loves to use the word "douche" .

The F-word is dropped a lot in both the East and West coast, but not so much in the mid-western region of the country.

A few parts of the country like to use the word 'bastard,' but no one drops it as much as Maine.

Almost the entire country loves to tell you you're an asshole, save for the South.

The next time you're planning a trip throughout the states, you might want to reference this study to help ensure your usage of curse words is on par with the locals.
